Wayne Madsen is eyeing a repeat of 2014 as Derbyshire begin their new Royal London One-Day Cup campaign with today’s game at Somerset before a home fixture with Yorkshire tomorrow.

Madsen scored two centuries and a fifty on his way to accumulating a total of 391 runs in eight List A fixtures last year, at an average of 65, as Derbyshire reached the quarter-final stages of the competition in its first year.

Like last season, Derbyshire start the tournament on the back of a win in the LV= County Championship and Madsen is hoping that is not the only similarity with last season’s one day campaign.

“We’re coming off the back of a good win in the LV= County Championship last week,” Madsen said. “It’s similar to what happened last year when we came back with a win at Cheltenham and then started the one day competition in good form.

“Having good memories of the competition gives you a lift and gives you the belief which is a massive part of the game.

“We started on minus two points last year and to qualify from that position was a great effort from the squad.

“We bowled four-day lengths and we were aggressive with that. With the bat we gave ourselves a chance with scoring big totals in quite a few matches.

“Wes and I both scored two centuries in last year’s competition which really helped and then the bowlers picked up wickets.”

“It is a mad schedule, but we can’t focus on that, we need to see it as a series of games close together so we can really focus on the competition.

“That’s how we will view it. There is no point dwelling on the travelling and that side of it

“It’s a new competition, we can really focus over the next ten days or so on getting our 50 over cricket right.

“It’s crucial to get off to a good start, we showed that last year. If you get yourself ahead in this competition with two or three wins early doors it can make a massive difference.”

Kids go FREE to Derbyshire’s Royal London One-Day Cup opener versus Yorkshire on Monday 27 July; 2pm start. Adult tickets purchased in advance of the day of the game are priced at just £14.
