Graeme Welch is targeting a fast start in the Royal London One-Day Cup ahead of the double header against Somerset at Taunton and Yorkshire Vikings at Derby on Monday.

The Falcons started last year’s campaign in fine fashion completing victories against Hampshire and Leicestershire Foxes in successive days in 2014, and Welch is hoping for more of the same this time round.

“I think we played really well in the Royal London One-Day Cup last year and it is imperative to get off to a good start like we did last year,” said Welch.

“We haven’t played Somerset for a few years so it is a little bit of an unknown, but it is usually a good pitch down there and we want to start well.

“I think the slightly longer game will suit us, there is more chance for people to ease their way into the game in 50-over cricket. I like the way we played last year and I like the concept of the competition.

“You have to think on your feet in this format, we have a blueprint that we are trying to put into place. Hopefully we can follow on from last year, win a few games and get to the next stage of the competition.

“The players have worked hard over the winter to be prepared for the games that are coming and our Strength & Conditioning Coach, Dr Jamie Tallent, has kept them fit all summer.

“We have had a few chats about it and we have likened it to a mini international series where it is full on for a short period of time. We will be doing a lot of analysing and a lot of reviews. The matches come thick and fast but that might not be a bad thing if we can get on a roll.

“We are in a better place than we were last year when we reached the last eight. We want to match that and perhaps go one better.”
