Matt Critchley (4-28) took four wickets before Scott Elstone hit an unbeaten 83 to guide the Second XI to a seven-wicket victory over Somerset in a 50-over Friendly at Belper.

Derbyshire had earlier dismissed their opponents for 141 after winning the toss and electing to bowl first, with Critchley ably backed up by Ben Cotton (2-15), Tom Taylor (2-27) and Alex Hughes (2-32) who all claimed two wickets apiece.

Elstone struck 10 fours and two sixes in his innings of 83 not out from 88 balls, with Alex Hughes also chipping in with a useful 28 as Derbyshire successfully reached 144-3 with 19 overs to spare.

Taylor had Somerset opener Eddie Bryom caught behind for one, with Tom Poynton then claiming two more catches behind the stumps off the bowling of Cotton to leave the visitors teetering on 24-3.

Tim Rouse (34) and Josh Davey (21) put on a fourth-wicket partnership of 48 until they fell in quick succession to the bowling of Critchley and Alex Hughes respectively.

Michael Bates was then bowled by Hughes for 11, prior to Critchley taking a further three wickets to run through the lower order. Taylor took the final wicket as Derbyshire were set 142 to win the game.

Davey dismissed Ben Slater (1) and Chesney Hughes (18) early on in Derbyshire’s reply to give his side a sniff but a third-wicket partnership of 115 between Elstone and Alex Hughes guided the hosts to the brink of victory.

Tom Knight was at the crease at the end to hit the winning boundary and seal a seven-wicket win.
