Billy Godleman hit his maiden century for the county, while Harvey Hosein broke a 79-year-old Club record, last time Derbyshire visited the Kia Oval in the LV= County Championship in 2014.

It was a memorable fixture for 18-year-old Hosein. Making his first-class debut, the wicketkeeper took seven catches in the first innings to become the youngest player to achieve the feat in a Championship innings and it equalled the Derbyshire record held by Bob Taylor, which he did twice in 1966 and in 1975.

Hosein combined with Mark Footitt (6-69) for four of his victims, as Surrey slumped to 181 all out on Day One in London.

In reply, Derbyshire posted 210, with Captain Wayne Madsen top scoring with 63 and passing 1,000 first-class runs for a second successive season. Ben Slater added 34 at the top of the order, but four wickets apiece from Tim Linley (4-79) and Stuart Meaker (4-39) restricted Derbyshire’s lead to just 29 runs.

Jason Roy hit 81 in the second innings, but he was one of three wickets to fall to Mark Footitt (3-62) who took his match tally to 9-131 as Surrey were all out for 279, setting Derbyshire 251 to win on day three.

The innings also saw Hosein take his tally of catches in the game to 11 and, with that, broke a Derbyshire record which had stood at 10 – jointly held by Bob Taylor in 1963 and Harry Elliott in 1935.

Set with a tricky chase for victory, it was left to Godleman to lead his side to victory hitting his first hundred for the county, ending unbeaten on 104 not out. It came off 183 balls and included nine fours and a six.

He shared a match-winning unbroken 154-run stand for the third wicket with India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara who hit 90 not out off 105 balls, while Slater had earlier hit 45.

The win was Derbyshire’s fourth Championship win in five fixtures as the county would go on to finish fourth in Division Two in 2014.
