Career-best for Durston but Surrey take control

Wes Durston returned a career-best 6-113 to take his first-class tally over 100 but it was Surrey who took control on Day Three at the Kia Oval.

Durston returned six wickets in an innings for the first time, but Zafar Ansari’s first century of the summer, along with a career-best 79 from James Burke, helped Surrey post 560 just before stumps, securing a first-innings lead of 247.

The Derbyshire bowlers bowled tightly in the morning session of Day Three, especially with the new ball, but could only take one Surrey wicket during the session which the hosts completed on 306-6.

The one man to go was Gary Wilson, who had begun the day on 36 and batted aggressively to double his score in reasonably quick time before edging Mark Footitt through to Harvey Hosein after sharing a century stand with Ansari.

Ansari, meanwhile, was watchful through the early stages of his innings alongside Burke as the pair saw off the new ball and then moved their partnership through three-figures before Ansari raced from 86 to his first LV= County Championship century of the season in a single over.

The stand between Ansari and Burke was finally broken on 148 after the pair had pushed their side past 400 as Ansari was adjudged lbw to Durston for 106 just before tea which Surrey took on 444-7.

Durston secured the 100th wicket of his first-class career when Burke edged him behind having scored his highest first-class score of 79, and then Durston picked up his fifth of the match when Sam Curran, having added 46, was caught by Wayne Madsen.

The final wicket fell after Tom Curran had added 24 during a last-wicket stand of 61 with Gareth Batty when Harvey Hosein stumped Curran off Durston’s bowling, his sixth wicket of the innings, and Surrey were 560 all out.
