Bad light limits play on Day One

Derbyshire claimed three wickets on a stop-start Day One of the Specsavers County Championship match against Middlesex at Lord’s.

Sam Robson (93) and Dawid Malan (51 not out) frustrated the Derbyshire bowlers, although Luis Reece, Sam Conners and Alex Hughes all struck on the opening day.

Bad light and rain meant that just 59 overs were bowled on Day One, with Middlesex 176-3, Martin Andersson also set to resume tomorrow on four.

An uncontested toss saw Derbyshire bowl on Day One at Lord’s, and the decision was vindicated early when Reece had Nick Gubbins caught behind without scoring.

However, the visitors struggled to break the partnership of Robson and Holden, with the pair adding 52 runs before the latter was caught by Wayne Madsen off Conners in the closing stages of the first session.

Robson continued after lunch and took his score to 93 before he was dismissed just short of his century after being caught by Harvey Hosein off Hughes.

An early tea was taken shortly after due to bad light and once play restarted, Malan brought up his half-century in 94 balls, including six fours before the players once again left the field.

A combination of bad light and rain brought an end to the day’s play, with Middlesex 176-3, Malan unbeaten on 51 and Andersson not out on four.
