Joe Clarke hit a career-best 194 and Joe Leach also passed three figures as Worcestershire enjoyed much the better of a rain-shortened Day Two at New Road.

Starting the day unbeaten on 117 and seven respectively, Clarke and Leach dominated the morning session, accumulating 157-run stand for the seventh wicket that put their side in control.

The afternoon session was repeatedly delayed by a mixture of bad light and rain showers, until heavy rain arrived shortly before tea, and put paid to the rest of the day’s play after Worcestershire had declared on 475-7 and Derbyshire had reached 15-0 in response.

Having begun Day Two on 246-6, Worcestershire made their attacking intentions clear from the start, with Clarke wasting no time in reaching 150 and Leach in bringing up a half-century.

The pair continued to put the visiting attack to the sword throughout much of the morning session, until Clarke was finally removed on the stroke of lunch, attempting to go from 194 to his maiden double-hundred in one fell swoop. He was caught by Alex Hughes in the deep off Wayne Madsen with Worcestershire 403-7.

After the interval, Ed Barnard joined Leach and provided stern support to see his partner through to only his second century in first-class cricket, which came up from 138 deliveries.

There were several short delays for bad light and light rain, which prompted the Worcestershire declaration at 475-7 with Leach 107 not out and Barnard 32 not out.

Derbyshire began their reply in positive fashion, reaching 15-0 off 2.3 overs, but heavy rain arrived and meant the day was caught short significantly.
