Brodrick hits fifty on Day Two vs West Indies

First class debutant Callum Brodrick top scored with 52 for Derbyshire on Day Two of the Bell & Co Tour Match versus West Indies at The 3aaa County Ground.

The 19-year-old hit his maiden first-class half-century, while opener Ben Slater added 39, but Derbyshire were dismissed for 181 during the final session of the day.

West Indies had earlier declared on 427-3, with Roston Chase (110 not out) and Shai Hope (107 not out) both striking unbeaten centuries, before the visitors closed the day on 60-1, a lead of 306 runs.

Hope and Chase reached their sixth centuries in first-class cricket off successive balls in the 11th over of the day. Together they added an unbeaten 196 for the fourth wicket when Captain Jason Holder called a halt.

Kemar Roach had Charlie Macdonell caught behind for nine and a three-wicket burst from Holder saw the tourists take six wickets between lunch and tea through disciplined, aggressive fast bowling to reduce Derbyshire to 115-7.

Slater was the standout batsman in the first session for Derbyshire, hitting 39 before he fell to Alzarri Joseph.

All seven wickets fell to catches behind the wicket, with five for wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and two for Kieran Powell at first slip with Holder taking three wickets in nine balls.

But Brodrick made the most of his opportunity in the county’s first-class side, striking his maiden half-century as he top scored with 52 off 91 balls, including seven fours.

After Tony Palladino clipped Chase to midwicket and Matt Sonczak edged Roach to slip, Holder chose not to enforce the follow-on which allowed his batsmen more experience of playing under the floodlights against the pink ball.

Brathwaite faced 43 balls before he drove loosely at James Taylor and was taken low down at gully to give the 16-year-old seamer his maiden first-class wicket but Powell added an unbeaten 41 to his first innings 92.
