Neil Broom hit his third century in this season’s Ford Trophy to help guide Otago to the Elimination Final with victory over Auckland.

Otago batted first and piled up 312, led by 109 off 120 balls from Neil Broom. Batting at number three, Broom, who hit 10 fours and one six, put on 158 with Michael Bracewell (69) for the second wicket to set up a match-winning total.

On the way to his hundred, the seventh of his List A career, Broom became the highest run scorer for Otago in a one-day season, passing former England Test and ODI batsman, Jonathan Trott.

By the eighth over of the chase, 21-year-old pacer Jacob Duffy had Otago firmly on top. He took three early wickets, reducing Auckland to 40 for 3. Neil Wagner and James Neesham struck soon after, and the game was as good as done.

Rain did end things early and Duckworth/Lewis came into play, but by then Auckland were already spluttering at 159 for 8 in 34, deemed to be 126 short of a winning score.

Broom remains the leading run scorer in this season’s Ford Trophy with 508 runs from eight matches with an average of 85, including three centuries and two fifties.

Otago Captain, Hamish Rutherford, is the fifth leading run scorer with 332 runs at an average of 48, including one hundred – a career-best 126 last time out.
