Batsman Neil Broom spoke to the media after the opening day of the Specsavers County Championship fixture versus Kent at The 3aaa County Ground.

Broom hit 96, while Wayne Madsen hit 103 before Shiv Thakor closed the day unbeaten on 86, as Derbyshire recovered from 35-3 to 381-7 at stumps.

Broom said: “It’s very pleasing to finish the day on 381 seven down which was a great turnaround and we showed a lot of character.

“When I went out there it was pretty spicey, it was doing a lot and Coles was bowling really well. But then it flattened out and was actually quite hard to score. It’s probably going to get slower and hopefully will turn for our spinners.

“I was determined to spend some time at the crease after missing out in the previous games so it was a battle mentally out there rather than anything else for me personally. Once I got to 40 or 50, I felt more natural and confident which bodes well for the next few months.

“It was a slower ball that got me, it swung back and did me for lack of pace. It hit me on the back leg so I was stone cold. It’s a shame not to get to three figures but the last five games I’ve been coming back in with no runs so I would have taken 96 at the start of the day.”
