Derbyshire batsman Neil Broom sits top of the run-scoring charts in the domestic Twenty20 competition in New Zealand after hitting two unbeaten half centuries for Otago Volts.

Broom’s two half-centuries in six Georgie Pie Super Smash matches has helped him soar to the top of the leaderboard and Otago Volts to the top of the league in the process.

The right-hander began the competition in fine form hitting an unbeaten 70 off 49 balls, including five fours and three sixes, in the second game after having made another half-century in a Major Association warm-up match versus Wellington the previous week.

He has since helped the Volts to two victories inside four days by hitting 42 not out at just over a run-a-ball to take his side home versus Canterbury, before smashing an unbeaten 70 off 53 balls to take Otago over the line against Wellington.

In the past two matches, Broom has fallen early in Otago’s chases but Derbyshire’s newest middle-order batsman still boasts an average of 76.66, having scored a total of 230 runs in the competition.

Broom’s compatriot, Hamish Rutherford, is still part of the New Zealand Test squad and recently took part in their Day/Night Tourist fixture versus Western Australia.

Broom and Rutherford will both be in Derbyshire colours in 2016 and be available for the entire campaign.
