Matthew Critchley, Ravi Rampaul and Luis Reece this week became the 113th, 114th and 115th Derbyshire cricketers to be awarded a County Cap since the capping system was introduced in 1946.

Heritage Officer and Statistician, David Griffin, looks at their records with Derbyshire.

Matthew Critchley (113) made his Derbyshire debut in a rain-affected County Championship fixture against Glamorgan at Cardiff in May 2015. However, it was his performance in the next game – against Northamptonshire at Derby a few days later – which brought him to the attention of Derbyshire followers.

Derbyshire were in some trouble on 103-6 when he arrived at the crease, but, batting at number eight, Critchley scored 137 not out, becoming the youngest player to score a century for the county, aged just 18 years and 270 days. It remains only the 26th hundred scored by a player batting at number 8 in Derbyshire’s history.

Critchley has since added two further first-class hundreds, including one at Lord’s against Middlesex in 2018.

In all forms of the game he has now played 134 matches and scored over 3,000 runs, and taken 130 wickets, including 10 wickets in the win over Northamptonshire at Chesterfield in 2018.

Meanwhile, his performances in T20 Vitality Blast cricket this summer have been a crucial aspect of Derbyshire’s progression to Finals Day, taking 17 wickets, a tally exceeded in a season for the county only by Ravi Rampaul.

Ravi Rampaul (114) joined Derbyshire at the start of the 2018 season as an established International cricketer, having made 133 appearances across all three formats of the game for the West Indies.

A virtual ever-present since the start of 2018, Rampaul has played 61 games for the county, taking 119 wickets, including 79 this season. In first class matches Rampaul has taken 49 wickets, and he is the new Derbyshire T20 record-holder, having taken 22 wickets in that competition this summer, beating the old record of 17.

He’s taken 5 wickets in an innings three times, including 5-48 v Yorkshire in a Royal London Cup game in 2018, and 5-94 against Glamorgan and 5-77 against Durham in 2019.

Rampaul’s bowling has been a key factor in Derbyshire’s successful T20 campaign in 2019; he’s the leading wicket-taker in the entire competition and has conceded just 6.64 runs per over.

Luis Reece (115) arrived at Derbyshire ahead of the 2017 season and made an immediate impact with an unbeaten 168 against Northamptonshire at Derby.

Reece is only the 13th player to score a century on his first-class debut for Derbyshire, and his 168 has only been bettered by Wayne Madsen’s 170* in 2009.

He’s scored six hundreds in all, including a superb 128 in a Royal London Cup game against Worcestershire at Derby earlier this summer.

In his 77 games for the county to date, Reece has scored over 3,000 runs and taken 92 wickets. His bowling has been a revelation in 2019, having already taken 51 first-class wickets at an average of 19.26, and a combined 59 wickets in all formats.
