Lead Physiotherapist, Fran Clarkson is pleased by the effort of the Derbyshire players during their winter training, and hopes to see the benefits in the New Year.

A host of first team players, such as Wayne Madsen and Tony Palladino, have been training daily with coaches at The Pattonair County ground since November, as they prepare for the 2020 season.

The group have been put through their paces in order to get into peak fitness before getting back into cricket practice at the start of 2020, with a number of others currently playing abroad.

Improvement in players’ speed has been a key focus during the current training programme, while all-round fitness has also been worked on throughout the sessions.

Clarkson and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jonty Norris, have been delighted with the work-rate of those training, and are pleased with the results so far.

“It has gone really well,” said Clarkson.

“There has been a core group training the whole time, and Jonty has given them group and individual goals.

“The lads have worked really hard, they have been motivated together and we’ve seen a really good uptake in the things that we want them to improve on, such as speed.”

The players are monitored closely to track their progress and to ensure that they are working on the right areas to improve their own fitness and performance.

However, Clarkson also says that working on player fitness over the winter can have a longer-lasting effect on injury prevention during the season.

“It’s one of those things where, in cricket, if they have trained hard their outcome will be runs and wickets, but we have things that we can see if they are meeting the goals that we have set them,” she added.

“It is about trying to make them see that the things we are doing with them are both for performance gains, it will help them in their cricket, but it’s also from an injury point-of-view as well.

“A lot of stats across sports show that teams that are fitter will often have lower injury rates, that is a global thing and we know that if you are fitter, you are less-likely to suffer injury.”
