A classy unbeaten 157 from former Derbyshire batsman Hashim Amla helped South Africa hold up England as the tourists took just one wicket on Day Three in Cape Town.

Having enjoyed a spell at The 3aaa County Ground in 2015, South Africa’s captain was given a life on 76 by James Anderson and took full advantage to go through to the 24th century of his Test career off 214 balls.

The Proteas began the day on 141-2 and Amla, alongside overnight partner AB De Villiers, continued to frustrate the England attack, adding a further 127 runs before De Villiers fell to Steven Finn on 88 following a 183-run stand with his skipper.

Amla, however, proved immovable on Day Three, ending it on 157 not out in the hosts’ 353-3 with the first innings deficit currently at 276 runs.
