Ben Cotton says he will continue to bowl with astute discipline after taking three wickets on Day One of the Specsavers County Championship match against Worcestershire at the New Road.

The paceman returned to the side for the final match of the season to take 3-46 from 17 overs as the home side finished on 255-6.

“It was nice to take a couple of wickets,” said Cotton. “It took me a while to settle in after my first five or six overs and find a nice rhythm to take the wickets that we needed.”

“The captain said that it wasn’t going to be a wicket that was going to blow a side away. We just had to put as many balls in the right areas and hopefully there would be enough there to take an edge or an lbw and that’s what I did.”

“Tony Palladino and Tom Milnes started quite well after tea and put some pressure on the batsmen and due to their hard work, managed to take another one towards the end.”

Derbyshire opted for an all-seam attack, including 20-year old debutant Greg Cork, and disciplined bowling from the visitors restricted the hosts to 36-2, before a 107-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell (67) and Joe Clarke prevailed.

“It’s quite refreshing to see good young seamers,” added Cotton. “I’m really happy for Greg to make his debut and he bowled quite nicely without any luck.

“I’ve said in the past that you can bowl well and take no wickets and then you can bowl worse and take a few wickets. Hopefully Greg can get a couple and get off the mark.”

“It feels abit like an academy game. There are eight people from this team that have come through the Derbyshire Academy. It’s quite nice that you’re playing with people you’ve grown up with seen how each other have developed.”

Derbyshire’s main adversary was Clarke, the leading run-scorer for the hosts recored his fifth Championship century this season, coming off twice as many balls before finishing unbeaten on 117.

The visitors will need to take four more wickets before they get their chance on a challenging batting surface, and their batting line up will look to build on the momentum from their last Championship game against Leicestershire.

“Hopefully one or two of the top order batsmen can score big,” said Cotton. “If we’re required, the lower order batsmen can help out towards the end.”
