Matt Critchley hit a century as Derbyshire finished 332-9 on Day One of the Specsavers County Championship clash versus Durham at Chesterfield.

Critchley scored his second first-class century of his career, while Wayne Madsen (54) and Billy Godleman (79 not out) both hit half centuries as Derbyshire put themselves in a good position after the first day.

Imran Tahir and former Middlesex left-arm fast bowler Gurjit Sandhu made their debuts for Derbyshire, while Gary Wilson and Tom Taylor were both rested ahead of the NatWest T20 Blast which starts on Friday.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first. Durham had an early breakthrough in the day as Chris Rushworth (1-59) dismissed Luis Reece lbw without scoring.

Ben Slater and Madsen put on 54 for the second wicket before Slater was caught off a Matty Potts delivery for 27. Madsen completed his half century off 106 balls, including eight fours, before he was dismissed by Paul Coughlin, with Derbyshire 139-4.

Critchley made an impressive 102 as he shared a 99-run partnership with Godleman (79*), batting at number six after feeling unwell during the morning session, for the fifth wicket, before the former was lbw to Potts. It was the 20-year-olds second first-class hundred, which came off 141 balls with 18 fours.

But his wicket started a difficult period for the hosts who slipped from 238-4 to 266-9. But record-breaking 66-run partnership for the final wicket between Godleman and Gurjit Singh (36*), on debut, helped their side go beyond 300.

At stumps, it was the joint highest final wicket stand for the county versus Durham, as Derbyshire closed on 332-9.
