Written by Stephen Martin

Derbyshire were beaten by Lancashire on Day Three of the Specsavers County Championship match at Emirates Old Trafford.

Josh Bohannon struck 174 for the hosts, while Liam Livinstone scored 71 as Lancashire secured promotion back to Division One, despite three wickets each for Ravi Rampaul (3-47) and Anuj Dal (3-60).

Derbyshire were bowled out for 129 in the second innings as Lancashire won by an innings and 45 runs, with Tom Bailey and Glenn Maxwell sharing six wickets.

Rampaul struck twice in as many balls on the third morning to remove Livingstone (71) as Derbyshire broke through the 199-run third-wicket partnership between him and Bohannon, with Harvey Hosein taking his 100th first-class catch for the club, before Maxwell was bowled for nought.

Bohannon continued for the hosts, and took his score to a career-best 174 before he was caught by Wayne Madsen off the bowling of Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Dane Vilas started quickly and reached his half-century in 53 balls, including ten fours, to take him beyond 1,000 first-class runs for the season before he was caught behind off  Dal in the final over before lunch, the bowler’s first County Championship wicket.

After the interval, Dal was once again in the action as he ran out Bailey for 26, before bowling Rob Jones for 37 to leave Lancashire 411-8.

Matt Critchley and Dal claimed the last two wickets to bring the Lancashire innings to a close on 418, with the hosts leading by 174.

Both of Derbyshire’s openers were dismissed by Bailey in the first ten overs to leave the visitors 49-2 at tea, still trailing by 125 runs at Emirates Old Trafford.

After tea, Wayne Madsen (28) and Leus du Plooy (15) fell in quick succession, while Matthew Parkinson claimed the wickets of Critchley (1), Dal (1) and Rampaul (0) to secure victory and promotion back to Division One for Lancashire.
