Derbyshire missed out on the Royal London One-Day Cup knockout stages after an eight-wicket defeat to Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge.

Rikki Wessels struck 63 from 34 balls and hit 11 boundaries to inspire the Outlaws to victory on a disappointing day for Derbyshire.

England international Jake Ball also took 4-29 from his 10 overs while Wayne Madsen (37) and Matt Critchley (33) combined for a 59-run partnership for Derbyshire at Trent Bridge.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat, but it was the home side who seized the initiative in the opening overs with three wickets in as many consecutive overs, as the Falcons were reduced to 19-3 after five overs.

Spinner Matt Carter removed Billy Godleman for four and Alex Hughes without scoring while Ben Slater fell to a good delivery from Jake Ball for five.

After losing early wickets, Madsen and Critchley met at the crease to stop the rot and rebuild the Derbyshire innings. The pair came together for a 59-run partnership from 95 balls which included seven boundaries to take the Falcons onto 74-3 after 20 overs.

However, Luke Fletcher came into the attack for Notts to break the partnership as the home side started to take wickets at regular intervals. Critchley was caught behind for 33 from 44 balls in the 21st over.

Wilson (3) then fell to Patel in the 26th over before a rampant Ball removed Madsen (37) and Daryn Smit (11) as Derbyshire slipped to 102-7 after 31 overs.

The Outlaws then took the final three wickets for eight runs as the Falcons were all out for 110.

Derbyshire came out with purpose in the early stages of Notts’ reply as Duanne Olivier got the breakthrough to dismiss Alex Hales (4) and reduce the hosts to 14-1 in the fourth over.

However, Tom Moores joined Rikki Wessels at the crease to kick-start the Outlaws’ innings, as the latter hit four sixes in an over to accelerate Notts onto 52-1 after seven overs.

Wessels eventually fell for 63 in the tenth over as Hardus Viljoen took the second wicket with the score 83-2.

Tom Moores then clinched victory for Notts in the 12th over, to finish with an unbeaten 41 from 28 balls.

Derbyshire return to red ball cricket on Saturday 9 June with Day One of the Specsavers County Championship fixture away to Durham.
