Derbyshire draw at Swansea

Wayne Madsen hit 55 and Tony Palladino batted for almost two hours in an indefatigable 30 not out as Derbyshire secured a draw against Glamorgan, who fell two wickets short of claiming victory.

Fine centuries from Kiran Carlson (152) and Usman Khawaja (126) gave Glamorgan a platform to attack in the morning and go on to post 403-7, setting Derbyshire 325 to win.

Unable to challenge the total, Derbyshire lost wickets at regular intervals, but Madsen’s knock, followed by resolute batting from Palladino and Duanne Olivier (6 not out), earned a draw and 11 points for Derbyshire.

Accelerating the Glamorgan innings almost from the off in the morning, Khawaja was first to 100 as the fifth-wicket partnership reached 200.

Carlson reached three figures soon after and then past his experienced partner, eventually out for a blistering 152 off 182 balls to end a 289-run stand.

Alex Hughes, buoyed by his century the previous day, removed both Khawaja and Chris Cooke (13), but David Lloyd struck an unbeaten 43 off just 26 balls to continue the hosts’ momentum and set Derbyshire a challenging 325 runs to win in just under two full sessions.

Palladino, who claimed five in the first innings, picked up the last wicket before the declaration on 403-7, the seamer’s 400th first-class wicket and 282nd for Derbyshire.

Derbyshire’s chase stuttered from the second over, Harvey Hosein out to Michael Hogan without scoring and Ben Slater followed soon after to leave the visitors 18-2.

Madsen hit his third half-century of the first-class season off 53 balls and with 10 fours, but the middle order failed to remain with the 34-year-old and Hughes (9) and Godleman (0) fell either side of the tea interval to keep Glamorgan on top.

When Madsen was out to Prem Sisodiya, caught at backward point, the hosts needed five more wickets for victory.

Palladino showed great resistance for the visitors, soaking up 108 deliveries for his unbeaten 30, primarily alongside Gary Wilson.

However, Wilson (26) fell to Carey lbw and Hogan continued to take wickets, Qadri (0) his fourth, to leave Derbyshire eight down with 14.3 overs left in the day.

But Palladino stood firm, absorbing the pressure alongside Olivier, who himself faced 33 balls for his six not out.

Hogan, who bowled well for his 4-43, bowled the final over but Palladino kept him out and Derbyshire closed on 147-8 to claim 11 points from the draw.
