Derbyshire lose to Worcestershire on Day Four

Derbyshire lost by an innings and 42 runs to Worcestershire on the final day of the Specsavers County Championship match at The 3aaa County Ground.

Worcestershire began Day Four on 323-3, with Joe Leach and Joe Clarke in the middle, but Jeevan Mendis (4-98) had the early breakthrough, dismissing Leach with the third ball of the day for 22.

Five overs later Clarke was caught at long-on for eight from the bowling of Tom Taylor (1-62) as Wayne Madsen took his second catch of the morning.

Shiv Thakor (4-45) was brought into the attack, returning wicket with his first ball, Ben Cox caught by Luis Reece for 27 off a leading edge.

Quick work from behind the stumps from Daryn Smit saw Barnard stumped for eight as Thakor took his second wicket of the morning.

Josh Tongue (2) was caught off Mendis then Tom Kohler-Cadmore added 42 before he was bowled by Thakor, the wicket bringing the declaration with the visitors on 415-9, a lead of 140.

Ben Slater and Reece opened the batting for Derbyshire but Ed Barnard (2-33) took two early wickets as Slater was caught at mid-wicket for 7, before new batsman Thakor was lbw for 0.

Reece (8), who was batting with a runner due to a minor knock, was run out by a direct hit from Barnard.

Billy Godleman soon followed as he was lbw to Leach (5-32) without scoring, Derbyshire heading into lunch at 33-4. Leach struck twice in the first over after the break as Madsen edged behind to Cox for 12, before Hughes was lbw for 6.

Mendis went for 16 after he top edged and was caught by Cox off Leach. Smit (9) was then lbw to the Worcestershire captain who claimed his fifth wicket.

Tongue was brought into the attack for the visitors and claimed the wicket of Taylor, edging through to Cox for 9.

Tony Palladino added a quick 28 before he was caught by Barnard off the bowling of Lyon (1-73) as Worcestershire claimed victory.
