Derbyshire has strengthened its squad for the remainder of the 2018 season with the signing of all-rounder Sean Ervine from Hampshire on an initial 28-day loan.

The 35-year-old will be available for the last six Specsavers County Championship matches this summer, beginning with the trip to face Sussex starting on Sunday 19 August.

A former Zimbabwe international, Ervine has played in five Tests and 42 ODIs, scoring 959 runs at an average of just under 30 and taking 50 wickets.

With experience of competitions around the world, Ervine has played a total of 227 first-class matches and scored 11,339 runs, with a top-score of 237 not out and an average of 36.45. He has also claimed 280 wickets with best figures of 6-82.

In total, he has scored 29 centuries and 94 half-centuries with the bat across all forms in an 18-year career which has also seen him feature in 251 List A matches and claim five limited-overs trophies with Hampshire.

Derbyshire Captain, Billy Godleman said: “We have six Specsavers County Championship games remaining this season and we still have plenty to play for.

“With Luis [Reece] still recovering from injury, we wanted to bring in an experienced head to strengthen our line-up and Sean fits the bill with both bat and ball.

“He’s a winner and hungry to score runs and take wickets, I’m sure he’ll do a great job out in the middle for us, as well as pass on his knowledge in the dressing room.”

Ervine added: “I’m excited and grateful to get the opportunity to play some regular first-class cricket at Derbyshire. The aim now is to be as competitive as possible in the final run of games and see where that can take us.”
