Glamorgan vs Derbyshire
Specsavers County Championship - Division Two
Tue 11 - Fri 14 Jun Swansea
Derbyshire take five wickets on rain-hit Day One
Tony Palladino and Luis Reece took two wickets each on a rain-affected Day One of the Specsavers County Championship game against Glamorgan at Swansea.
Rain delayed the start of the match until 1:30pm, with an uncontested toss allowing Billy Godleman’s side to bowl first amid overcast conditions at St Helens.
Marnus Labuschagne made a quick-fire 37 before being caught by Alex Hughes off the bowling of Luis Reece, while further wickets from Reece, Palladino and Logan van Beek left the game finely-poised at the end of Day One, as the hosts closed on 167-5.
After the rain had pushed the start of play back more than two hours, Palladino made up for lost time by trapping Nick Selman (0) lbw with the fourth ball of the day.
However, Derbyshire could not capitalise on the momentum of a wicket, with rain forcing the players off before another ball could be bowled. Once play resumed, Labuschagne and Charlie Hemphrey fought back for the hosts, bringing up their 50-partnership in just 12 overs.
Their stand of 54 was broken when the Australia all-rounder edged a ball from Reece to Hughes in the slips during the bowler’s first over of the innings.
David Lloyd came to the crease and picked up where Labuschagne left off, putting on 47 with Hemphrey (32) before the latter was dismissed by Palladino lbw, the same way his opening partner Selman went.
Having entered tea on 114-3, Glamorgan lost a wicket in the second over after the interval when Lloyd (32) was caught by Tom Lace driving at a ball from van Beek.
Billy Root came into the game as the form batsman for Glamorgan, having hit a double-hundred against Northamptonshire last time out. However, he couldn’t replicate that feat on Day One against Derbyshire, falling for 28 when he was caught by Wayne Madsen off Reece.
Bad light forced play to be halted shortly after five o’clock, with Glamorgan 167-5, Owen Morgan (24*) and Dan Douthwaite (5*) will resume on Day Two.
