Derbyshire has today announced a new coaching structure which will be headed up by new Director of Cricket, Kim Barnett.

Barnett, who is the Club’s all-time leading run-scorer and captained the county to two title-winning seasons, will lead the implementation of the new model.

The 56-year-old will report to the Cricket Advisory Director, Kevin Dean, and will be responsible for the development and implementation of the cricket strategy, co-ordinate the coaching, captains and support agencies and will deal with all cricket administrative matters.

Reporting to the Director of Cricket will be a dedicated Twenty20 Specialist Coach with the job of focusing solely on delivering the Club’s improved performance in this specific competition.

This role – the first time a County Cricket Club has appointed a specialist coach for the NatWest T20 Blast campaign – will be for a period of three months and will also be involved in appointing his Twenty20 Captain and deciding on which international players to recruit for the competition.

In addition, the Club will also appoint a new role of First XI Support Coach whose sole focus will be to work with Captain Billy Godleman and his players to ensure that the players have the requisite support to deliver improved performance in the Specsavers County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup.

Finally, the Club will create a new role of Development Coach. This recognises the crucial need to develop home-grown talent and more closely integrate the work of the Academy, the Second XI and the Player Pathway.

As well as responsibility for running our Academy programme and the Club’s Second XI, this crucial role will encompass a greater degree of talent identification amongst the age group cricketers within the county and beyond.

The individuals appointed to these full-time coaching roles will be supported by Tony Palladino, after he recently signed a new two-year contract in a player/coach role.

Dr Jamie Tallent (PhD) will remain at the Club as Strength & Conditioning Coach, while the Club has appointed Fran Clarkson (ACPSEM) to the role of Lead Physiotherapist.

Clarkson joins the Club with over 10 years’ experience in the field, including eight years of experience of working within a variety of professional sporting environments, including her previous employment as Second XI Physiotherapist at Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

The Club will also recreate a specialist coaching fund with financial resources set aside to bring in coaches and former world-class players with specific skills to assist our players on an occasional basis where required.

It is intended to roll-out a programme similar to that which saw Matt Critchley join up for a specialist coaching session with Shane Warne at Lord’s last week.

The process of recruitment of the T20 Specialist Coach, First XI Support Coach and Development Coach will commence immediately.
