Falcons make it six straight wins over Vikings

Derbyshire Falcons beat Yorkshire Vikings by 55 runs at Emerald Headingley to make it six successive victories over their near-neighbours in Twenty20 cricket.

Leus du Plooy equalled the club’s fastest-ever half-century and Wayne Madsen hit a well-made 66 as Derbyshire posted 207-5.

Logan van Beek set the tone with the ball, picking up career-best figures of 4-17, while impressive fielding rounded off a good team display to bowl the hosts out for 152.

After being put into bat, Derbyshire lost the early wicket of Luis Reece (11), but captain Billy Godleman continued to attack, using his feet to the spinners as the visitors ended the powerplay on 55-1.

When Godleman was caught down the leg side in Jordan Thompson’s first over, du Plooy joined Madsen in the middle and the left-hand, right-hand combination set about taking Derbyshire past 100 in an 87-run stand.

Driving the seamers and sweeping the spinners, Madsen quickly built a platform, while du Plooy took former Derbyshire bowler, Duanne Olivier, for 32 off one over – the highest single-over score in Twenty20 cricket for the club.

The following over he brought up his half-century in just 20 balls, this time equalling Wes Durston’s fastest-ever Derbyshire fifty.

Not to be outdone, Madsen ramped the off spinner Jack Shutt and powered Olivier down the ground, picking up the mantle after du Plooy was dismissed for 51.

On 179-4 by the time Madsen was out, Derbyshire were well-placed to accelerate and with depth to the batting line-up there were cameos from Matt Critchley (17), Alex Hughes (10) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (15) as the Falcons posted 207-5 from their 20 overs.

With three wickets in the first four overs, Derbyshire got their defence off to a good start as the pace pairing of van Beek and Ravi Rampaul (1-33) dismissed the dangerous top-order.

Jack Leaning (36) and Jordan Thompson (23) briefly kept the hosts up with the required rate, but Derbyshire claimed wickets at regular intervals, including a diving catch from Daryn Smit, while a direct hit from Godleman typified a fine fielding performance.

A fourth for van Beek and two wickets in the 17th over for Reece had the game sewn up for Derbyshire, with a run out by the New Zealand quick completing a 55-run victory.

The two points sees Derbyshire go above Yorkshire in the table into eighth, ahead of three games next week, starting with the visit of Worcestershire Rapids to The Pattonair County Ground on Tuesday 13 August.
