Godleman and Lace hit half-centuries on Day Two

Billy Godleman and Tom Lace struck half-centuries for Derbyshire on a high-scoring Day Two of the Specsavers County Championship game against Glamorgan at Swansea. 

Graham Wagg’s 102-ball century helped Glamorgan to 394 all out to put the hosts in a commanding position, before Godleman and Lace fought back in the final session, combining for 147 runs before bad light ended the day.

Godleman (86 not out) and Lace (78 not out) will resume with Derbyshire 221-2 on Day Three, trailing by 173.

After taking a wicket in the first over of an even Day One, Tony Palladino made a breakthrough early on the second morning when he bowled Owen Morgan for 43.

Logan van Beek had Dan Douthwaite caught by Madsen for 27, while Luis Reece claimed the wicket of Tom Cullen (6) the in the next over of a frenetic first session in Swansea.

Wagg and Lukas Carey stayed at the crease until lunch, playing positively and making up for the lost time on the opening day.

The pair continued to score quickly after lunch and extended their partnership to 167 as Carey reached his half-century and Wagg brought up 100 runs.

However, Wagg could not move beyond the century as Leus du Plooy had him caught in the deep by Reece, ending the hosts’ ninth-wicket partnership.

Michael Hogan was only able to make one run before du Plooy took his second wicket, with Harvey Hosein stumping the Glamorgan seamer to bring the innings to a close on 394.

Luis Reece opened the batting with Godleman and the pair put on 52 runs for the first wicket before the former got out for 29 caught by Wagg off Douthwaite.

Wayne Madsen joined Godleman at the crease and added 20 to the score before he was caught by Lloyd off Carey in the final over before tea, with Derbyshire on 74-2 from 11.2 overs.

Lace picked up the mantle continued to score quickly with Godleman, as the pair brought up their half-century partnership in 13 overs.

They continued to add runs more steadily, with Lace bringing up his half-century in 64 balls, hitting eight fours in that time. Godleman followed-suit and arrived at his fifty in 89 balls, seven of which came in fours.

Bad light put an end to the day’s play, with the pair’s partnership standing at 147 for the third wicket.

Derbyshire will resume on Day Three 221-2, trailing Glamorgan by 173 runs.
