Captain Billy Godleman says he is disappointed with the manner of the defeat, but wants the squad to use reflection time wisely after the Specsavers County Championship loss to Worcestershire.
Derbyshire lost by an innings and 42 runs at The 3aaa County Ground after being dismissed for 98 on the final day.
“We are hugely disappointed to have lost the game, but more so the manner in which we did,” said Godleman.
“To have fought really hard in testing conditions to post a total of 275 and then not be able to apply any pressure back on Worcestershire, enabling them to get off to a good start, was really disappointing.
“That added more pressure on our second innings batting, but we shouldn’t have been bowled out for 98.
He added: “You always want a strike bowler out on the park and unfortunately we have two strike bowlers out injured at the moment, but that’s life.
“The way to earn wickets, particularly after the new ball has gone, is to put the ball in a challenging area and stop the opposition scoring quickly. Unfortunately we didn’t build the pressure to take wickets, other than Shiv [Thakor] who did it very well.”
Derbyshire took six quick wickets in the morning as Worcestershire declared on 415-9, before the visitors reduced Derbyshire to 33-4 at lunch.
“We ideally wouldn’t be in the position we were in the first hour this morning, but it did go as well as it could,” said Godleman.
“Jeevan Mendis bowled nicely into the foot-holes but in that 50 minutes before lunch in which we had to bat we lost four wickets for a mixture of reasons.
“It was always going to be an uphill battle after lunch. Largely the batting has been good this season, and I cannot condone being bowled out for 98, but occasionally as a batting unit you won’t bat well.
“Against a wearing wicket and a well-rested attack, we didn’t have the application to get through that.”
Derbyshire move onto Leicestershire in the Specsavers County Championship at The 3aaa County Ground, starting on Thursday 25 May, and Godleman wants the squad to use the reflection time wisely.
“We had an honest discussion in the changing room after the game. It is important as a group and as individuals that we are clear on what we need to get better at and how we are going to do that.
“The games come thick and fast and unless you use reflection time wisely then it can become a turn up and play situation and that certainly won’t happen under my watch.”
