Billy Godleman says he’s excited to commit his future to Derbyshire, after signing a new contract that will see him at the Club until the end of the 2018 season.

In 2015, Godleman struck over 1,000 first-class runs for the first time in his career, and has backed that up with another prosperous season, whilst also taking over the captaincy duties at the start of the campaign.

With three four-day fixtures left this year, Godleman currently sits on 849 Specsavers County Championship runs at an average of 47, and is hoping he can continue to score runs for the county for years to come.

He said: “It’s exciting to commit myself to Derbyshire. In my role as Captain, I’m very privileged to have the opportunity to play and represent Derbyshire, but also help to develop the younger players and the progress of the Club.

“First and foremost, my job is to bat and then make tactical decisions on the field, but a huge part of my role is helping develop the younger guys, being there for them, both on and off the field to help their development.

“It’s an exciting crop of youngsters we have, particularly the young pace bowling resources, and you don’t want to heap too much expectation on them because they are still learning their game.

“But for raw talent and for hunger to learn and succeed, I think we have a really exciting group of young players.

“I feel very privileged to lead the team, to lead my friends, and lead the young exciting talent coming through and we’re doing all we can to make sure we’re making progress on the field.”

Godleman and his Derbyshire team are next be in action at The 3aaa County Ground in the Specsavers County Championship against Gloucestershire, starting on Wednesday 31 August.
