Billy Godleman has recovered from a fractured thumb to take his place in Derbyshire’s 12-man squad to face Northamptonshire from Sunday 1 May.

Godleman will captain the side for the first time since being named four-day Captain and is set to open the batting alongside Chesney Hughes, who has scored 252 runs in three Specsavers County Championship innings.

Ben Slater and Ben Cotton miss out from the squad that faced Glamorgan at The 3aaa County Ground last week.

Elite Performance Director, Graeme Welch said: “Billy was disappointed to miss the last two games and he’s champing at the bit to get back out there, so it’s good to have him back.

“I was pleased with the performance from the team last week. I think we bowled very well as a unit and got even better in the second innings, so lots of positives to take into this week.

“We are looking forward to the next game. We have a method in how we are going to play and bowl in particular, and we will enjoy success if we continue to play on good pitches.”

Opposition

Northamptonshire have played two Specsavers County Championship fixtures, tasting defeat to Essex and drawing their opening fixture against Sussex.

Wicketkeeper Ben Duckett has been the county’s standout performer, hitting a brilliant unbeaten 282 in the season opener, with only the rain stopping the 21-year-old reaching his triple hundred. He backed this up with a half-century against Essex last week, but the visitors fell to a convincing innings and 92-run defeat to the hands of the early Division Two pace setters.

Pace bowler Ben Sanderson has also enjoyed a good start to the new campaign, claiming his second career five wicket haul in the defeat to Essex.
