Dave Houghton wants Derbyshire to bounce back from their defeat to Lancashire in their final Specsavers County Championship home game against Sussex next week.

Derbyshire were defeated at Emirates Old Trafford by an innings and 45 runs, meaning they are eighth in the table heading into their final two games against Sussex and Middlesex.

The first of those matches starts at The Pattonair County Ground on Monday, and Houghton says that a victory would give the team confidence as they look ahead to the 2020 campaign.

“For me, every single game is about trying to win another game of four-day cricket,” Houghton said

“We wanted to win promotion and I think we should have won a couple more games in the first half of the season.

“It’s about getting out there and getting experience of playing four-day cricket, if we can win one of our remaining two games then it will put us in good stead for next season.”

Houghton also believes Anuj Dal, who signed a new two-year deal this week, will be a big asset for the squad moving forward.

“We are in the position where we are not sure if he is a batsman who bowls, or a bowler who bats,” Houghton added.

“He has scored a few runs for us when he has played as a batsman, he made 90-odd against Middlesex and scored some runs against Glamorgan earlier in the season.

“It was a tough match for him with the bat (against Lancashire), but he has come up and taken three good wickets, which shows the potential that he has in both sides of his game.

“He is still young, so hopefully in a year or so we will see him as a consistent performer in this team.”
