Hughes hits fifty on rain-hit Day Two

Saturday 20th May 2017
Written by Danny Painter

Alex Hughes hit a half-century on a rain-affected Day Two of the Specsavers County Championship match against Worcestershire.

Derbyshire fought back nicely after two early wickets fell, one for Jack Shantry (2-40) and one for Joe Leach (2-35), on another rain-hit day.

Luis Reece (54) was the first to go, caught at first slip off Jack Shantry for 59 in the second over of the day. Shortly after, Leach had Billy Godleman caught behind for 19.

But Hughes and Daryn Smit responded well moving Derbyshire to 157-5, before rain brought an early lunch after just 13.4 overs.

Play resumed at 2.05pm. Hughes and Smit continued to bat well together to share a 78-run partnership before Hughes was lbw to Lyon (1-40) for a well made 53 off 64 balls, including seven fours.

Heavy rain arrived immediately after the dismissal and, after a further inspection at 5pm, no further play was possible due to a wet outfield.

Smit ended the day unbeaten on 27, with Derbyshire 200-6. Play resumes tomorrow at 11am with 104 overs scheduled in the day.
