Director of Cricket, Kim Barnett, believes fast bowler Conor McKerr will provide a strike bowling option during his 28-day initial loan from Surrey.

The 19-year-old paceman joins up with the Derbyshire squad ahead of the Specsavers County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, starting on Friday 2 June.

Born in South Africa, the pace bowler holds a British passport and comes highly recommended by Surrey Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart. He will provide Derbyshire with a fast bowling option in the absences of Hardus Viljoen and Will Davis.

Barnett said: “The Captain, Vice-Captain and coaching staff felt the squad needed the impetus of a quick bowler.

“I spoke to Alec Stewart, who has kindly agreed the deal for free. I am looking forward to seeing him bowl and he will be given a good chance over the next 28 days.

“He joins up with the squad this week and will be in the squad that travels to Trent Bridge in the Specsavers County Championship.”

He added: “We are under the cosh with the ball with two strike bowlers missing. But the team reacted brilliantly against Leicestershire, to get over 500 was a great effort.”

Barnett also confirmed that specialist Twenty20 coach, John Wright, returns to the Club where he scored 4331 List A runs next week ahead of the NatWest T20 Blast competition which begins in July.

“John Wright will be at the Club next week and watch the cricket before he starts as NatWest T20 Blast coach in July.

“He’s going to have Dominic Cork alongside him as bowling adviser for the campaign. They’ll have a good team there along with our own coaches and we hope that we are going to have a good campaign.”
