John Wright will return to Derbyshire as Specialist Twenty20 Coach for the 2018 Vitality Blast competition.

The highly-experienced Twenty20 coach guided Derbyshire to their first quarter-final in the format since 2005 last summer, and a first ever home last-eight tie at The 3aaa County Ground.

It was a record-breaking campaign as Derbyshire claimed eight victories – a record for a single campaign – and finished second in the North Group to secure a home quarter-final.

Wright has a wealth of coaching experience, having been Head Coach of India for five years from 2000, before coaching his native New Zealand from 2010 and leading Mumbai Indians to the Indian Premier League and Champions League double in 2013.

He will work closely with former England and Derbyshire bowler Dominic Cork, who will also return for 2018 as Specialist Twenty20 Bowling Coach.

Wright, whose return to Derbyshire is subject to final approvals, and Cork’s sole priority will be progressing in the Vitality Blast in 2018.

Cricket Advisor, Kim Barnett said: “We’re delighted to have John and Dominic back as specialist coaches for the Vitality Blast this summer.

“We saw great progress in the shortest format in 2017, securing a home quarter-final for the first time and playing a positive brand of cricket throughout the competition.

“John, Dominic and all the players are determined to build on the successes from last summer and continue our progression in this format. Our ultimate aim is to reach Finals Day and bring silverware to Derbyshire.”
