Opposition

Loughborough MCCU have had a busy pre-season, playing away to Leicestershire and Northamptonshire over the past two weeks.

Basil Akram, who has experience with a number of first-class counties, including Hampshire and Nottinghamshire, took five wickets in Leicestershire’s first innings, his best figures in first-class cricket.

He followed the five-wicket haul with 44 runs in Loughborough’s reply as the game ended in a draw.

Loughborough had three centurions in their draw with Northamptonshire earlier this week. Charlie Thurston opened the innings, scoring 126 including 18 boundaries, before Nitish Kumar came in at four and top-scored with 141 from 145 balls.

Sam Evans hit his highest first-class score of 114 as the University side posted an impressive 553 in a high-scoring draw.

Pre-Match Talk

Club Captain Billy Godleman is looking forward to the fixture and the chance for the squad to play competitive cricket again.

He said: “The Loughborough fixture is a good opportunity for us to get some outdoor match time. Both the bowlers and batters can get some competitive cricket under their belt.

“We’ve spent quite a bit of time in the Briggs of Burton Pre-Season Marquee which has been excellent practice for us but it’s now time we start transitioning into competitive cricket.”
