Charlie Macdonell hit 136 not out as Derbyshire took control on Day One of the Second XI Championship fixture versus Lancashire at Hem Heath CC.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat but Lancashire got an early breakthrough, opening batsman John Hancock (0) caught by Rob Jones as Danny Lamb (2-61) took the first of his two wickets.

Shortly after, Ben Slater was caught by wicketkeeper Brooke Guest for 14 off Toby Lester (1-58). Harvey Hosein added 22 before being caught by Callum Turner as Lamb claimed his second wicket of the day.

Macdonell and Matt Critchley batted nicely, sharing a 189-run partnership before Matt McKiernan (1-24) eventually ended Critchley’s innings, caught at short mid-wicket for a well-made 89, including 11 fours and two sixes.

Arron Lilley (1-56) removed Tom Wood for six, Jones claiming his third catch of the innings.

Callum Brodrick joined Macdonell at the crease and the pair shared an 85 run partnership until the close of play, steering Derbyshire into a strong position going into the second of three days.
