Madsen hits century in win over Warwickshire

Wayne Madsen top-scored with 119 not out as Derbyshire beat Warwickshire by five wickets at The Pattonair County Ground in the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Madsen’s fifth career List A century in Derbyshire’s third win of the competition keeps them in the race for a knockout spot ahead of a trip to face Lancashire on Thursday.

His unbeaten ton, alongside a well-made 69 from Alex Hughes, was enough for Derbyshire to chase down 289-5 with 21 balls to spare after Alex Thomson earlier hit an unbeaten 68 for the visitors.

Warwickshire made a strong start to reach 31-1 in the fourth over after Derbyshire had won the toss and elected to bowl first.

However, Logan van Beek got the breakthrough as he took a catch off his own bowling to remove Ed Pollock for 18.

The 28-year-old then took his second as Dom Sibley (29) was caught behind by Harvey Hosein as the visitors were 66-2 after ten overs.

Luis Reece then got in on the act as Hain (34) was also caught behind, before Scotland international Watt took two wickets in quick succession.

He trapped Will Rhodes for 20, before Liam Banks (4) was caught on the boundary by Alex Hughes as Warwickshire slipped to 113-5.

Alex Mellor then joined Alex Thomson in the middle as the pair put on a 103-run stand for the sixth wicket to take the score to 216-6.

Mellor (58) passed his half-century before as van Beek returned to the attack to take his third and end the partnership.

Thomson (68) also brought up his fifty shortly after, as he and George Panayi (26) combined for a 58-run partnership to carry the visitors to 288-7 after 50 overs.

Billy Godleman and Reece got Derbyshire off to a strong start in reply, as the pair both hit multiple boundaries to accelerate the score to 42-0 after six overs.

They reached 63-0 before Godleman fell for 40 as Thomson took his first, before the all-rounder returned to remove Reece (37) shortly after to reduce the hosts to 82-2.

Madsen rallied to strike a number of boundaries in quick succession before Jeetan Patel came into the attack to remove Tom Lace for eight.

The 35-year-old then continued his fine form to pass his second half-century off the campaign, coming off 43 balls and including seven fours and one maximum.

Hughes also passed his fifty shortly after, as the pair brought up their century partnership in the 36th over to take the score to 211-3 and put Derbyshire in a strong position.

He was eventually out to Thomson, who had bowled well from the Racecourse end, caught by Pollock for 69 to end their 134-run stand.

Harvey Hosein fell without scoring, but Madsen powered on alongside Matt Critchley and struck George Panayi back down the ground for six to end the game in style and keep Derbyshire’s hopes of a knockout spot alive.
