Wayne Madsen was delighted with the win over Worcestershire Rapids at New Road and thinks the Falcons will take great confidence into the fixture versus Northants Steelbacks at Chesterfield on Sunday 3 July.

Madsen hit a superb unbeaten 59 during an unbroken stand of 97 with Chesney Hughes (43 not out off 27 balls) as the Falcons chased down 185 to beat the Rapids – their second highest successful chase in Twenty20 cricket.

Having led his side to an impressive victory, Madsen is now determined to take confidence from the win into the next game against Northants Steelbacks on Sunday, which marks the start of the Custom Solar Chesterfield Festival, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council.

Madsen said: “We are delighted with the way we went about the chase. We got a good start in the first six overs which set the platform for us to be able to unleash towards the back-end of the chase.

“We had a good chase here in the 50-over game a few weeks ago so we have good memories of the place.

“I thought we bowled very well up front. To pick up the wickets was crucial. We were a bit sloppy towards the end with our skills with the balls. They were able to get up to a total about 25 more than they were looking.

“We have got a little bit to work on there but I thought we were clinical up front which set us up.”

“It was a really good wicket with pace so you could hit through the line,” Madsen added. “We knew with a total like that, we had to go hard from the start.

“We had to be ahead early doors and that’s what the boys did. It allowed us to free up and finish it off at the back-end.

“The rain came at an interesting time with still 56 needed from five overs. We knew we had wickets in the bag which was the crucial thing. We had power to come so we were able to play our shots and it came off.”

With Northants Steelbacks currently riding high at the top of the North Division, the big games keep coming for the Falcons and Madsen is looking to make it successive wins on Sunday.

“We need back this up on Sunday now. Obviously Northants are flying at the top of the table so it’s a very important game for us.

“We need to back up the performances but we will take a lot of confidence from the way we played. Both with the ball and with the bat.

“I think it’s a good day for us today – it’s always nice to have a chase like this.”
