Wayne Madsen says he’s delighted to commit his future to Derbyshire in what is an exciting time for the Club.

The 34-year-old, who has hit over 1,500 runs for the Club in all formats in 2018, has signed a three-year contract extension to keep him at the Club until the end of the 2022 season.

He said the appointment of David Houghton as new Head of Cricket played a major part in his decision and he can’t wait to work with the former Zimbabwe Test batsman again.

He said: “As a family we love living in Derbyshire and are really happy here, so for me to sign for another four years is really exciting for us all.

“I’ve done 10 seasons, so it’s exciting now going forward especially with Houghts [David Houghton] coming back. He is a fantastic coach and for me a great mentor. It was pretty key in signing for another four years. He’s a brilliant coach and it’s an exciting time going forward for the Club.

“The experience and contacts he has around the cricket world, from playing and coaching, is crucial for us to be able to attract players and get us playing in the right way as well.”

Madsen, who this summer surpassed 1,000 first-class runs for the fifth time in a single season, highlighted recent progress across all forms, particularly in the Specsavers County Championship, and hopes Derbyshire can continue to improve and challenge for silverware in the years to come.

He added: “For the supporters and for everyone at the Club it really is exciting. All the way through from the age groups through to the Academy – and it’s Houghts’ vision to bring them through to the first team and this is crucial for us as a Club.

“We’ve had periods of good results in white ball, but fell short in terms of qualifying for the knockout stages. But the Club is going in the right direction and we know how to win games as a team.

“We’ve had some special times over the years at the Club, but there’s a lot to look forward to in what we can achieve in the next four or so seasons.”
