Wayne Madsen spoke to the media after the Specsavers County Championship defeat against Kent at The 3aaa County Ground.

He said: “The plan was to get 200-220 and then bowl at them. We were 40-50 short of where we wanted to be but the intent was to go out and win this game and we were not able to do that.

“To be honest, we thought 200 was going to be a good score and we would be able to bowl them out but they came out and played positively and we did not get enough balls in the right area to trouble them.

“It didn’t help that we had to change the ball a couple of times because it got wet but that’s not looking for excuses. The game got away from us at the crucial time, half way through day three and going into day four. We’ve got to be better than that.

“We knew the wicket was going to deteriorate and they made the best of it towards the back end.

“It wasn’t ideal losing three wickets last night but this morning Broomy and myself got us off to a bit of a start and to lose the two of us quite quickly after each other was a blow.

“James Tredwell is an experienced bowler and bowled well into the rough. Haggett just bowled at the stumps and got it to jag back and stay low.

“They made things difficult for the batters and we have to learn from that but unfortunately we were not up to it today.

“We have to be better than that, especially on a wicket which has deteriorated. I look back at the way we bowled for the first 100 overs, our disciplines and plans were spot on, but the game got away from us at the crucial times on day three and going into day four.

“As a positive, Shiv [Thakor] played very well for his hundred and five-for, he’s really played well for us all season so far.”
