Wayne Madsen says it is an honour to captain Derbyshire after looking back on the Club’s proud history at the Heritage Lunch this week.

Derbyshire’s skipper joined ex-players Harold Rhodes, Bob Taylor MBE, Edwin Smith, Chris Adams and Tony Borrington on the panel as they looked back on some of their favourite moments from their time at the County.

Madsen is hoping that he and his teammates can take inspiration from the achievements of the Derbyshire greats as they look to find success in 2016.

Madsen said: “It is a huge honour for me to be at the Heritage Lunch with so many great former players and people that have been in involved in the Club over the years.

“We have an extremely proud heritage as a Club over the 145 years that we have been around. To honour that today, and be here as Captain, makes me extremely proud.

“To see all the old players that are here and to listen to them talk about what they achieved at the Club is great. There’s some phenomenal stats with a few of the guys that are here.

“I think it’s great to be in their presence, great to be talking to them and learning from them, but also to see all the history and the different bits of memorabilia that has been kept over the years. It really does hit home for me.”

He added: “It is an inspiration for myself and the other players to see what has been achieved before. The exciting thing is that we get to make our mark as well.

“This is our time to do what they have done. It’s an exciting time for us and it’s great to be here at a time when we get to leave our legacy.

“Hopefully I have quite a few more years in me before we can look back. It would be great if we were able to look back in 10, 15 or 20 years’ time and see what has been achieved during this period.

“As a Cricket Club, we have survived and thrived on the culture that has been created here. It’s time for us to continue flying that flag taking it forward.”

The Derbyshire squad were back at The 3aaa County Ground last week to begin their pre-season preparations and Madsen is excited to start planning for next season.

“The first week back in pre-season training has been a bit sore on the body,” Madsen admitted.

“But it has been great to be back, great to be back with the team and the lads again. I’m pretty excited to start training again.

“The season seems a long way off but in a couple of weeks we will have the fixtures out and then the planning really starts to begin.”
