Maiden century for Hosein on Day Three

Thursday 22nd September 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Harvey Hosein scored his maiden first-class century on Day Three at New Road, but six wickets in the day by Joe Leach leaves the hosts on top.

Hosein showed defiance whilst others fell around him to score 108 off 249 balls with 11 fours and shared a important 96-run partnership with Greg Cork (49) but Derbyshire were dismissed for 248 and asked to follow-on.

Beginning the second innings 227 runs behind, the visitors then lost an early wicket to be 15-1 at the close.

Derbyshire could only add five runs to their overnight score of 15-0 before the first two wickets fell. Billy Godleman (11) was well held by Worcestershire wicketkeeper Ben Cox off Leach before the same man had Tom Wood lbw without scoring in the same over.

Wayne Madsen fell for four before Ben Slater showed resistance to add 25 until being fourth man out with the score on 59, and then Alex Hughes was caught at slip for four shortly afterwards as the hosts turned the screw in the first session.

Coming into the match on the back of three successive fifties, Hosein again stood firm in the face of adversity. He saw his side to lunch on 73-5 before taking the visitors past 100 with help from Tom Milnes who eventually perished for 16.

On first-class debut, Cork joined Hosein and set about creating a battling partnership that lasted the rest of the afternoon session. At tea, Derbyshire were 194-6, having scored 121 runs in the session thanks to Hosein and Cork.

It looked as though Cork would mark his first first-class innings with a half-century, but he was unfortunately out on 49, to end a 96-run stand with Hosein that had got their side to almost 200.

Soon after, Derbyshire lost Tony Palladino (eight) and Will Davis (0) in consecutive balls to Ed Barnard with Hosein on the verge of a maiden first-class century but running out of partners.

The 20-year-old was able to reach double-figures though, hitting his 240th ball faced for his 11th four to complete a superb century in the face of adversity and continue his impressive end to the season with the bat.

Hosein was eventually out for just the third time in the seven innings he has played this campaign, having scored 108, as Derbyshire were all out for 248 and asked to follow-on 227 runs adrift.

Worcestershire’s Leach collected figures of 5-60 from the first innings and added to that early in the second innings as he had Slater caught in the slips without scoring.

Derbyshire faced 11 overs of their second innings before the close, reaching 15-1 with Hughes 10 not out and Godleman three not out.
