Northants fixture abandoned

Sunday 3rd July 2016
Written by Danny Painter

The NatWest T20 Blast match between Derbyshire Falcons and Northants Steelbacks at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, was abandoned without a ball bowled due to a waterlogged outfield.

The ground took on a vast amount of water in the days leading up to the match and, despite a dry matchday and positive forecast, the umpires deemed that the outfield was too wet for the fixture to take place.

The Club made every effort to try and get the game started, giving the outfield as much time as possible to dry, but the match was unfortunately called off at 2.30pm after a second inspection.

Wayne Madsen said: “We were very keen to play on the back of a win and it’s disappointing we weren’t able to get a game today but it’s too wet underfoot and makes it dangerous. With fast bowlers running in at pace if they or someone slips over in the outfield the risk of injury is just too great.

“I feel for the umpires because but at the end of the day they have to make sure the players are safe and personally my feeling is it’s not safe to play. I wouldn’t want to be playing on it and I believe the call they made is definitely the right one, as disappointing as it is for all the fans but that’s just the nature of the game we play.”
