Tony Palladino says he’s excited to continue doing “the best job in the world” after he signed a new two-year contract with a coaching role that will keep him at Derbyshire until 2018.

The 33-year-old bowler has taken 258 wickets for Derbyshire in all forms of the game, after he joined the Club in 2011 from Essex.

So far this season, he has taken 26 wickets in the Specsavers County Championship, at an average of 36.11, with best bowling figures of 5-83 against Glamorgan.

He is also closing in on the milestone of 350 first class wickets, currently sitting just two wickets away on 348.

Palladino said: “I just want to keep bowling well and try and win some games with Derbyshire. I want to try and be available in all forms and keep taking wickets and doing the job that I’ve been asked.

“I want to keep bowling well and just play for as long as I can because at the end of the day it’s the best job in the world and I love doing it.”

Palladino’s coaching role will involve mentoring the young players at the Club, and according to him, advice from senior players is invaluable as a young player.

“I was lucky enough to have guys help me out during the early stages of my career, so looking to the future when I do finish playing hopefully I can become a coach as well because it really is something that I want to do.

“Not only have we got a good young set of bowlers, we have some good young batters coming through.

“It’s about getting them ready for that and helping out as much as I can, giving them little tips here and there but mainly just helping them to become the best cricketers they can be.”

Looking ahead to the rest of this season Palladino said: “We’ll be looking to win every game. Giving the guys that are playing as much chance as possible, but also giving some of the younger guys that have just come into the side a bit more experience with a view to standing them in good stead for next season.

“Hopefully that carries some momentum into next season but first and foremost it’s about trying to win games of cricket, and to take a few wickets and score a few runs would be nice as well.”

Palladino and the rest of the Derbyshire team will next be in action at The 3aaa County Ground on August 31 versus Gloucestershire in the Specsavers County Championship.
