Derbyshire Women’s Rachel Hopkins believes women’s cricket within the county is moving forward after the announcement that Derby will be a host city at the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup.

Alongside Derbyshire Women teammate Rebekah Grimley, Hopkins delivered the host city news to a number of local dignitaries in the 3aaa Pavilion, including Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Paul Pegg, and Leader of Derby City Council, Councillor Ranjit Banwait.

Hopkins hopes that the Women’s World Cup at Derby will be another yardstick in the significant progress that the women’s game has made in recent years.

“I think the women’s game is forever moving forward,” Hopkins said. “It’s getting up there with the men, changing all the time and getting stronger. It’s getting more powerful and, hopefully, the World Cup is going to put us on that stage.

“You want that equality and you want to be noticed alongside the men. I think that is changing and getting better year by year.”

Hopkins was recently named as the first female captain in more than 250 years of men’s cricket in Derbyshire, taking over the Sawley & Long Eaton Park Cricket Club Second XI side.

She added: “I’ve been playing men’s cricket for a lot of my life now, so there is not a lot that’s new to me with banter on the field.

“There’s still huge respect from my club especially and others that I’ve played against. Being named the captain is something that I wasn’t expecting but something I’m looking forward to.”
