Reece and Godleman shine on Day Three

Sunday 16th April 2017
Written by Danny Painter

Openers Luis Reece and Billy Godleman shared an unbroken 142-run opening stand on a rain-shortened third day to keep the match finely-poised.

After Northamptonshire were dismissed for 307 in the morning, the Derbyshire pair batted the remainder of the day, which was cut short by rain.

Both Reece and Godleman hit half centuries to steer their side to 142-0 at stumps, a lead of 116 going in to the final day at The 3aaa County Ground.

Reece said: “It’s a nice start, Billy has led from the front as he usually does and he’s a good lad to bat with and keeps you going. We’ve got a big day tomorrow to try and force a first win of the season.

“It will probably take a bit of time to get a complete understanding, but Billy makes it very easy when you bat with him, he’s a tough character and he’s always positive out there.”

Derbyshire struck in the fourth over of the morning, Tom Milnes (1-58) bowling Max Holden for a well-made 76 off 108 balls to dismiss the visitors for 307 – a first innings lead of 26 runs.

Openers Reece and Godleman made a watchful start in the face of some disciplined bowling from Rory Kleinveldt and Ben Sanderson.  The opening pair, however, remained firm to reach the lunch interval on 38-0.

After rain delayed the restart, play finally got back underway at 3.10pm, and the Derbyshire duo continued their good work from before the break.

Reece reached his maiden fifty for the Club off 92 balls, which included seven fours, as the opening stand moved out to 85 at tea.

Rain arrived once again after the restart, with the opening pair still unbeaten on 92. Play finally got back underway at 5.50pm, with 16 overs before the close.

This was enough time for Godleman to reach his own half-century, off 121 balls, as the opening stand passed 100.

The pair reached 142 without loss off 52 overs at stumps, with Reece unbeaten on 69, currently the 28th highest score on debut for Derbyshire, and Godleman 63 not out.
