Seconds dominate against Leicestershire

Written by Danny Painter

Tom Wood hit 128 and Daryn Smit scored 88 runs across the two matches as Derbyshire claimed back-to-back Second XI T20 victories over Leicestershire at Denby CC.

There were also contributions across the bowling unit as a strong Derbyshire side dominated the two short-format matches.

After losing the toss and bowling first in the opening fixture, Derbyshire’s bowlers did well to restrict the visitors to just 138-8 from their 20 overs, largely down to four wickets for Grant Thornton (4-34) and a tight four overs from Hamidullah Qadri (2-17).

Chasing the modest total, Chesney Hughes was out for 16, but Wood (37) and Callum Brodrick (35) batted nicely and added 63 for the second wicket to take Derbyshire within 50 of their target with eight overs remaining.

Coming in at four, Smit (26 not out) took Derbyshire over the line with one ball to spare.

Derbyshire enjoyed a much higher-scoring innings in the final match and after winning the toss and electing to bat first they posted 189-6 from their 20 overs.

Wood was in fine form, hitting a blistering 91 from just 57 balls, including eight fours and four sixes, while the opener was well supported by Smit, who himself struck eight fours and one six in his unbeaten 62.

The defence of their total got off to a good start, as Thornton removed Charles Lowen in the third over and soon Leicestershire were 34-2.

Harry Swindells showed resistance in his 40 off 20 balls, but wickets for each of the bowlers, including three for Qadri, soon left the visitors 121-6 in the 14th over.

Smit made an impact with the ball this time, his leg spin claiming two wickets for eight runs as Leicestershire were all out for 143, giving Derbyshire a 46-run victory.
