Seconds draw final Championship fixture

Andrew Umeed hit his second century of the match but Derbyshire were forced to settle for a draw in their final Second XI Championship match of the summer, against Sussex at Blackstone Academy Ground.

Sussex resumed on 50 without loss as both sides attempted to force a positive result in the three-day fixture.

The hosts looked to score quickly and soon reached 177-3 in 31 overs as Hamidullah Qadri (2-32) picked up two wickets.

At this point they declared, setting Derbyshire 284 runs to win in 63 overs in the hope of claiming the ten wickets needed for victory.

A tough, but possible chase, Derbyshire lost Callum Brodrick (20) in the tenth before reaching 110-3 as James Kettleborough (36) and Tom Wood (32) made starts but couldn’t go on.

Following on from his unbeaten 128 in the first innings, Umeed kept Derbyshire in the chase with boundaries around the ground in a fluent knock which saw him reach three figures again, eventually out for a well-made 101 off 119 balls.

Zen Malik added 42 and Derbyshire kept with the rate, but late tight bowling from the hosts saw them strike twice in the space of ten runs and Derbyshire could only reach 270-6 at the close of an entertaining three-day fixture.
