Seconds enjoy double T20 success over Notts

Derbyshire Second XI produced a fine all-round performance to defeat Notts Seconds by 29 runs and eight wickets in two Second XI Twenty20 fixtures at The 3aaa County Ground.

The Seconds put out a strong team for both fixtures with Wes Durston captaining fellow first-team regulars Neil Broom, Hamish Rutherford and Andy Carter across the double-header.

Batting first in the opening match, Derbyshire made 156-5 thanks largely to the efforts of Ben Slater. The opener continued his good form for the Second XI by anchoring the innings to score 57.

Elsewhere, there were runs for Scott Elstone (28 not out), Broom (17) and Matt Critchley (14) as the hosts defied a Notts attack led by their Captain, Luke Fletcher.

The hosts were then able to take wickets regularly throughout the Notts reply, with the wickets largely shared between the strong Derbyshire attack.

Left-armer Harry White was the pick, returning 2-14 as Notts finished their 20 overs on 127-8 to give the hosts victory by 29 runs. The margin of victory would have been even greater had it not been for a couple of late sixes by Matt Carter who hit 24.

Derbyshire fielded first in the second game and made early inroads into their opposition. Notts’ top three of Billy Root, Tom Moores and Brendan Taylor all fell cheaply as the hosts took control, just as they had earlier on in the day.

Sam Wood and Dan Hodgson offered a degree of resistance for Notts, scoring 28 and 34 respectively, but they could only score a below par 123-5 from their 20 overs. Will Davis took 2-26, whilst Andy Carter returned a more than economical 1-10 from his four overs.

Despite losing Durston for nine and Rutherford shortly after for 25, Derbyshire made light work of chasing the their target of 124 for victory.

Greg Cork and Alex Hughes shared an unbroken partnership of 84 for the third wicket, scoring 40 and 45 each, as Derbyshire ran out comfortable winners with over three overs to spare.
