Seconds in good position after Day One

Thursday 21st June 2018
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire trail Glamorgan by just seven runs with four wickets in hand after an eventful opening day of a three-day Second XI friendly at Belper Meadows CC.

Charlie Hartley (4-64) and Will Davis (4-78) each took four wickets as Derbyshire dismissed the visitors for 210, with Aneurin  Donald top-scoring with 127 off just 92 balls.

In reply, Derbyshire closed on 203-6, with Chesney Hughes hitting 68 and Tom Wood adding 63 to leave their side in a good position heading into Day Two.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Derbyshire got off to the perfect start as Hartley bowled Lorenzo Machado (0) in the first over.

Will Davis removed Harry Allen in the tenth and soon Glamorgan were 41-5, with former Derbyshire all-rounder Graham Wagg bowled by Davis.

But as wickets continued to tumble, Donald was effervescent and took the attack to the bowlers, striking at well above a run-a-ball to help the visitors towards a competitive total.

He was eventually out to Hartley for a fine 127, which included nine fours and six sixes, as Glamorgan were all out for 210.

Opening for Derbyshire, James Kettleborough fell to Ruaidhri Smith for two, but Hughes pushed on, striking 12 fours in his 68.

He was well supported by Wood, who himself reached a half-century before he was caught behind on 63.

Daryn Smit remains for Derbyshire, unbeaten on 22, alongside young wicketkeeper-batsman Anoop Chima, who is six not out overnight.

The hosts will resume on the morning of Day Two on 203-6, trailing Glamorgan by seven runs and hoping to earn a useful first innings lead.
