Tom Wood hit 72 for Derbyshire, but they slipped to a four-wicket defeat away to Nottinghamshire in the Second XI One-Day Trophy.

After Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bowl, the home side took the early wickets of opening batsmen James Kettleborough (9) and Harvey Hosein (7) to reduce Derbyshire to 24-2 in the seventh over.

Wood came to the crease to rebuild Derbyshire’s innings and he made partnerships of 84 and 50 with Callum Brodrick (34) and Anuj Dal to accelerate the score to 158-3 before he fell to Liam Patterson-White in the 35th over.

Kamau Leverock then removed Dal after he had made a quick-fire 60 from 55 balls before Matt Milnes returned to the attack to take three quick wickets, improving his figures to 4-31 as Derbyshire set the hosts 257 to win.

Nottinghamshire started strongly in their reply and raced onto 70-0 after 10 overs. James Taylor then dismissed Luke Wood for 36 before fellow opener Solomon Budinger hit 63 from 57 balls for the hosts.

Will Davis began the fight back for Derbyshire and took the wickets of Budinger and Saad Ashraf (25) in quick succession. Derbyshire then reduced Nottinghamshire to 173-6 in the 33rd over before Patterson-White (46 not out) came together with Jake Libby (61 not out) for a partnership of 84 to clinch victory for the hosts.

Derbyshire are next in Second XI action on Monday 11 June, when they face Nottinghamshire in back-to-back Twenty20 matches in the same day at The 3aaa County Ground.
