Matthew Sonczak hit 45 and there were to wickets each for Alfie Gleadall and Charlie Hartley, but it was not enough as the Second XI lost to Worcestershire by 91 runs.

The Second XI Trophy fixture at Alvaston and Boulton Cricket Club was dominated by Ross Whiteley, who hit an unbeaten 116 as Worcestershire finished on 276-6 from their 50 overs.

Derbyshire scored runs throughout the order in the reply, but wickets fell at regular intervals until the hosts were ultimately bowled out for 185, 92 runs short of their target.

Opening the batting for Worcestershire, George Rhodes hit a well-made 87 from 115 balls, alongside Joshua Dell (32) and Whiteley.

Hartley (2-64) and Gleadall (2-37) set about disrupting the middle-order, but Whiteley remained a constant threat, striking six fours and seven sixes as Worcestershire finished on 276-6.

James Kettleborough (11) fell in the seventh over of the Derbyshire reply, and three further wickets soon followed as Derbyshire slipped to 85-4.

Tom Wood looked fluent in his 35, but once his chipped a full toss to mid-wicket, Derbyshire were 131-5, needing a further 146 in under 20 overs with five wickets remaining.

Sonczak played well for his 45, but he soon followed Wood and Derbyshire’s chances faded. Gleadall (11), Sam Connors (0) and Hartley (14) were out in the space of five runs as the visitors closed in on victory.

James Sykes struck a six in his eight, but he was last man out to seal a 91-run victory for Worcestershire.

Derbyshire are next in Second XI action on Monday 7 May, when they start a three-day Second XI Championship fixture with Warwickshire at Hem Heath CC.
